Procedure:
Surgical drainage of an abscess around the
anus.
Risks of this procedure:
There are some risks/ complications, which
include:
(a) Heavy bleeding may occur from the wound.
This may require further surgery and rarely
a blood transfusion.
(b) The abscess may recur or a fistula may
develop. This may require further surgery.
(c) Further drainage may be necessary to
open up other foci of infection.
(d) The wound may be thick or reddened as
healing occurs, and may be painful.
(e) Increased risk in obese people of wound
infection, chest infection, heart and lung
complications and thrombosis.
(f) Increased risk in smokers of wound and
chest infections, heart and lung
complications and thrombosis.
